Addressing Safety Concerns: Ford’s Response to Unexpected Vehicle Rollaways

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into Ford Motor Co.’s recall of more than 250,000 Explorer SUVs in the United States. The recall was prompted by numerous customer complaints regarding repairs intended to prevent the vehicles from unexpectedly rolling away, even when placed in park.

The reported issue is attributed to fractures in the rear axle mounting bolt, which may cause the drive shaft to disconnect. Ford attempted to resolve this problem through a software update that activates the electronic parking brake in the event of drive shaft failure. However, recent feedback from two vehicle owners suggests that the repairs have resulted in unpredictable behavior in their SUVs.

Erratic Behavior Post-Repair: Unforeseen Consequences

According to one complaint, an Explorer abruptly came to a halt at speeds of up to 30 or 40 miles per hour. In another incident, the vehicle unexpectedly surged forward while the driver was attempting to disengage the electronic brake. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either case. However, the first driver did mention colliding with a utility pole when the Explorer started rolling downhill after the sudden stop, likely due to the disengagement of the drivetrain.

The initial recall encompassed specific models, including the 2020 through 2022 Explorers with 2.3-liter engines, as well as the 3-liter and 3.3-liter hybrids, and the 3-liter ST variant. It also involved the 2020 and 2021 Explorer Police hybrids and those equipped with 3.3-liter gas engines. Notably, both incidents reported involved 2021 Explorers.

Ford’s Commitment: Collaborating with NHTSA for Resolution

A Ford representative has assured that the company is actively cooperating with the NHTSA regarding this matter. By working together, Ford aims to address the concerns raised by customers and find an appropriate solution to ensure the safety and reliability of the affected Explorer SUVs.

As investigations continue, it remains crucial for Ford to promptly resolve the reported issues to uphold their commitment to customer safety. Through diligent collaboration and comprehensive evaluation, Ford can rectify any faults identified and deliver an enhanced driving experience for their customers.

By prioritizing safety and employing thorough quality control measures, Ford Motor Co. can uphold its reputation as a leading automotive manufacturer, providing drivers with reliable and secure vehicles they can trust.
